The effect of the covid 19 pandemic has risen such that more and more people are supposed to stay indoors until conditions become better. More people staying at home would mean more of them working from home and increased pressure on the networks which make up the internet. This could way slow down network performances or even ”break the internet”. For this reason, Netflix and Youtube will temporarily lower their streaming quality in Europe to reduce the overload on the internet service providers. 30 days from now should show this change.
According to Forbes, both companies agreed to reduce their streaming because their platforms account for substantial internet usage. The moves follow discussions made by the CEO’s of both companies and the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
“We are making a commitment to temporarily switch all traffic in the EU to standard definition by default,” it said in a statement.
