The UEFA vice president Ángel María Villar, the senior of eight vice-presidents behind the Fifa president, Gianni Infantino has resigned. The 67-year-old has been in jail since today due to suspicion of corruption allegations of collusion, embezzlement and falsifying documents being leveled against him during his tenure in the Spanish FA office.
Ángel María Villar is one of the influencers in football around the globe. He was arrested in last week in an investigation into a suspected corruption connected to the Spanish football federation.
His son Gorka Villar also has been detained in connection with the scandal. Earlier this year, Michel Platini was also suspended and Angel Maria Villar moved to the ranks as a top official.
“In view of the ongoing court proceedings in Spain, we have no further comments to make on this matter,” Uefa said in a brief statement released earlier this week.
The four top officials have been denied bailed and even been transferred to another jail cells. “It has been alleged that Villar used his influence to funnel private and public funds into regional federations in exchange for votes to remain in power for eight consecutive terms” according to the SUN.
